A Canadian suspected of belonging to a network of spying for Russia has been arrested today while attempting to leave the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean.
Metsos Robert Christopher, 54, was on the list of 11 suspects wanted by the FBI undercover operations in American political circles.
According to a report by Reuters, the authorities have apprehended Metsos laundering and espionage. At the time of his arrest he was trying to fly to Budapest, Hungary.
Robert Christopher Metsos was released on bail and had to put his papers to travel. It must refer to the police until the extradition proceedings against him began. The United States believes that funds provided to staff stationed in the United States.
Yesterday the U.S. State Department announced the arrest of 10 people suspected of having passed sensitive information to Russian intelligence, the SVR, the successor of the famous KGB.
U.S. officials have stressed that the suspects lived apparently ordinary lives in the regions of New York, Boston and Virginia, under false identities.
The haul antispy FBI comes after a survey of over 10 years, based inter alia on the spinning, wiretaps and video surveillance.
According to Washington, people stopped using the material worthy of him appearing in the spy movies, encrypting messages and hiding microfilm in unusual objects.
Ten suspects have been charged with conspiracy. They face penalties ranging from five to ten years in prison.
Moscow reacts
The Russian Foreign Ministry said today that he would look into the allegations broadcast by the U.S. State Department, but he regarded the report as controversial.
"The reports command details," said a spokesman for the Russian ministry.
For his part, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not hide his discomfort due to the timing of announcing the strike against suspected spies in the office of Moscow.
"The only thing I can say now is the time to do this has been chosen with particular elegance," he joked from Jerusalem.
The arrests come just days after the visit to American soil by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Already, many analysts worry that this project contributes to the cooling of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Washington.
